As a one-woman show here at Bar Lyn Leather, I do everything from cutting, to tooling, stitching and dying the leather. I began working with leather in college and learned how to tool leather as a hobby. I grew interested in this ancient cowboy craft after seeing a friends handiwork, in using a bridle she made, while we were branding calves at Cal Poly. I've always had an affinity for drawing and painting but have never been passionate about a craft until I learned to tool. I loved the way you could wet and shape the leather to create the depth and flow of a piece!
I graduated from Cal Poly SLO in Animal Science with a PreVeterinary concentration and have worked in the veterinary field on and off, for nearly a decade. I switched tracks and am now attending Colorado State part-time working on my Master's in Ag Science with a concentration in resource management. But, Leather is my full time job.I have several quarter horses and ride and show in Cowhorse events. I work and live with my animals including my mini pot belly pig "Jimmy Dean," goats, horses and the perfect shop mutt, Yogi.
I'd make special items here and there, but it wasn't until I needed gear of my own, that I began to seriously consider this as a business. I built myself a pair of chaps to show in a Reined Cowhorse show. From there I created custom pairs for friends and grew to where I am today. I now have my own business and workshop . I learn from every piece I make and strive to continue to educate myself in the art and get better. Leatherwork is a lost art and I hope to help preserve it!
